Best Season: June to September
Day 1: Arrival in Leh (3,500m)
Leh, located at an elevation of over 3,500 meters above sea level, is the second-largest district in India. Due to winter conditions when most passes to Leh are closed, you’ll be flown directly to Leh Airport, the highest airport in the world. Upon arrival, you’ll be greeted by the dry, cold air and the stunning sight of snow-capped mountains surrounding the town, a view that will remain etched in your memory. After completing the arrival formalities and collecting your luggage, take a taxi to your pre-arranged hotel. Enjoy an overnight stay in the hotel.
Day 2: Acclimatization Walk in Leh
Start your morning early with an acclimatization walk. Head towards the Shanti Stupa, a sacred Buddhist stupa offering a panoramic view of Leh and a spectacular sunrise. As you take in the views, make sure to stay hydrated to help your body adjust to the high altitude. Spend the rest of the day relaxing and allowing your body to acclimatize.
Day 3: Medical Check-up at SNM Hospital
Due to the physically demanding nature of the Chadar trek, the government requires all participants to undergo a medical examination. You will need to visit the Sonam Narbu Hospital in Leh to obtain a medical clearance certificate. This certificate confirms that you are fit and acclimatized for the trek.
Day 4: Shingra Koma and Somo Paldar
After breakfast, begin your journey by driving to Shingra Koma. This ride is an adventure in itself, with winding roads and sharp bends that offer views of towering mountains. Once you reach a certain point, you’ll leave the vehicle and begin trekking towards Somo Paldar campsite, where your Chadar trek officially begins.
Day 5: Trek to Dib Cave/Tibb
Today’s trek takes you to Dib Cave (also known as Tibb). As you journey through ravines and gorges, the beauty of the landscape unfolds. Due to the steep cliffs, you may not see much direct sunlight. Once you reach Dib, you’ll find a large cave, where you will rest for the night. Butter tea will be served, and we highly recommend giving it a try. Spend the night at the campsite.
Day 6: Dib Cave/Tibb to Naerak
Today, you’ll trek through one of the most scenic parts of the region, passing the largest frozen waterfall and prayer flags. A bridge built near the waterfall is used in the summer to connect Leh to Zanskar. Continue towards the village of Naerak, where you can interact with the locals and learn about their way of life. Enjoy an overnight stay at the village campsite.
Day 7: Naerak to Tibb
Start your return journey towards Tibb today. The trail back can be challenging, as the river’s ice may have changed due to fluctuations in temperature. As you retrace your steps, take in the breathtaking scenery, capture photos, and meet the locals wearing traditional woolen Gonchas. Upon reaching Dib Cave, relax and stay overnight at the campsite.
Day 8: Tibb to Shingra Koma & Return to Leh
In the morning, leave Tibb and head back to Shingra Koma, crossing Gyalpo. The route offers the chance to spot wildlife tracks, including those of snow leopards, ibex, and foxes. If you’re lucky, you may even spot a snow leopard! As you travel back to Leh in the evening, enjoy one last look at the majestic mountains. Stay overnight at the hotel in Leh.
Day 9: Departure from Leh
The journey to one of India’s most scenic destinations comes to an end today. The experience will surely leave you with a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction. Check out from the guesthouse and head to Leh Airport for your departure.
